Spring Thaw ?

Roaring Branch with Geren during a very warm January day. A great level for Roaring Branch, we tried to put on one of its many tributaries. Due to a very icy  road to the upper sections of the watershed we decided that it wasn't the day to play with ice.

The Dirtbag Guides to Whitewater - Eric Adsit

>> Thursday, January 19, 2012

I was fortunate enough to be asked to contribute some images to The Dirtbag Guides to Whitewater at the end of last year. Eric Adsit worked hard to produce what I hope will be a recurring online, free publication. It's filled with some great photos from all the contributors and even better essays.
With limited publications in the whitewater world and a growing population of kayakers capturing great photos with high quality equipment, it's nice to see someone take the initiative to put something like this together.

First Paddle of 2012 - A Cold Rock Run

>> Sunday, January 15, 2012

With this warm winter not leaving the area, we got some rain and managed to get out for a session on Rock Run, it was only -4 C. We managed to squeeze two laps in before it started to get cold, including the "dodgy" drop below the take out. I had only heard war stories of people getting hurt, mysterious rocks but never the good stories of people running great lines. The week after xmas I paddle the bottom drop with Art Baker, we had a good look to see where the hazardous spots are, we both ran good lines. So yesterday, I offered to take Josh to have a look at the bottom drop, we both ran the rapid. I'm hoping to try get rid of the heavy war stories and replace them with factual, positive stories of the drop, as its one of the best drops on the river, offering a few different lines to choose from.
I'm excited for the spring and a high water !

Here's a shot of Joshua on his first lap down Rock Run's A-Frame rapid.
